A properly honed and sharpened razor is the key to great straight razor shaves.

After a period of time your straight razor needs to be honed as it will lose it’s sharpness and become dull. The razor will start to pull, feel harsh on your face and barely cut any hair with nothing but razor burn, nicks and cuts as a result. Most if not all new razors will not come shave ready when initially purchased. Depending daily use and beard type a straight razor will normally become dull and need to be re-sharpened several times a year.

More and more people are switching back to the old shaving ritual. When you look at the ridiculous prices for disposable blades like Gillette Mach 3 , Fusion,.. and we’re not even talking about the many tons of steel that are consumed each year in this way, never to be seen again until and unless the house is torn down? I’d love to know how much steel and other less common metals we consume annually in the form of blades. The manufacturers are using platinum now and claiming 10 or 15 shaves per blade, the same number claimed for the stainless steel cutting edges when they were introduced seven or eight years back. Is this an improvement?

Most if not all shavers that decide to start using a straight razor, never look back. Be warned. There is a learning curve involved. It will take some time if this is your first time. But again, once you master the art of straight shaving, there’s no way back. Shaving should be a fun thing, not a boring ritual!
